INTRODUCTION

The tram systems of Asia disappeared with the colonial era
and the Western imperialists that built them. But their memory lingers in the hundreds of photographs that can be found in old books and magazines, and especially on the millions of antique picture postcards that the tourists, travelers and businessmen that flocked to Asia in the colonial period mailed home to friends, families and business associates.

The following pages show trams in 40 cities in 19 countries.
Place names are those that were used during the tram era,
which was roughly from 1890 through 1940. Japan is excluded for it deserves a website of its own. All views, unless noted, are from the author's collection. Additional information was provided in 2002 by Roy Budmiger, Reinhold Zimmermann and Wisarut Bholsithi.
